The last ice age, also known as the Pleistocene epoch, saw vast glacial expansion and significant climate changes. While many species, including ice age giants like mammoths and saber-toothed cats, went extinct, modern humans, or Homo sapiens, survived by adapting to the harsh conditions and migrating to new areas.

The last ice age, which began about 2.6 million years ago and ended around 11,700 years ago, saw periods of intense glaciation and warmer interglacial periods.

Many large mammals, including woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and giant ground sloths, went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene.

Humans adapted to the harsh climate through technological advancements like clothing, fire, and tools for gathering and hunting.

Some humans migrated to warmer areas, while others, like wolves and bears, adapted to the harsh conditions in Central Europe.

Humans developed strong social bonds, communication, and cultural practices that aided in survival.

Survival Strategies used by human:

  1. Toolmaking: Humans developed sophisticated tools for hunting, gathering, and other essential tasks, including the first tools used to make other tools.

  2. Clothing and Shelter: The use of animal hides and the construction of dwellings like those found at the site in Lower Saxony, Germany, helped provide warmth and protection.

  3. Fire: Fire was crucial for warmth, cooking, and potentially even for defense.

  4. Hunting and Foraging: Humans relied on hunting large animals like mammoths and reindeer, as well as gathering plants for sustenance.

  5. Social Bonds: Sharing food, caring for each other, and building social networks were essential for survival in the harsh environment.

  6. Knowledge of the Environment: Humans had a deep understanding of their surroundings, including the seasonal cycles of animals and plants, which was crucial for survival.
