Earth has had at least five major ice ages, including the Huronian, Cryogenian, Andean-Saharan, late Paleozoic, and the Quaternary Ice Age.
The most recent one, the Pleistocene Epoch (part of the Quaternary ice age) , spanning from roughly 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, characterized by repeated glacial advances and retreats is commonly considered the "Ice Age".
Humans developed significantly during this last glaciation period, emerging as the dominant land animal afterward as megafauna such as the wooly mammoth went extinct.
Humans survived the ice age through various adaptations, including toolmaking, clothing, and fire, and by migrating to different regions.
We are currently in an interglacial period of the Quaternary glaciation, known as the Holocene epoch, which began around 11,700 years ago.
