Evidence suggests that Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens interacted, overlapped in time and space, and even interbred, with some Natural History Museum research indicating that Neanderthal DNA is present in the genomes of some modern humans.
Archaeological and genetic evidence indicates that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens lived in the same regions of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East for thousands of years.
The oldest known remains of modern humans in Europe, found in the Bacho Kiro Cave in Bulgaria, reveal between 3% and 3.8% of Neanderthal DNA.
