The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that caused significant damage and casualties along the Pacific coast, including in Chile, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.
In Chile, the earthquake and tsunami caused an estimated 1,600 deaths, 3,000 injuries, and left 2 million people homeless.
The tsunami killed 61 people in Hawaii, 138 in Japan, and 32 in the Philippines.
The earthquake also triggered the eruption of Chile's Cordón Caulle volcano.
