NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to Earth on March 18, 2025, after an unexpected 9-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS), originally planned as an 8-day mission, due to technical issues with their spacecraft.

Technical problems, including helium leaks and propulsion system malfunctions, delayed their return and forced them to remain on the ISS for an extended period.

After the Starliner was deemed unfit to fly, NASA reassigned Williams and Wilmore to SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, and they were transported to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

On March 18, 2025, Williams and Wilmore, along with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, undocked from the ISS and began their return journey aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.
